WE ARE HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO REPORT
TOGETHER WE WERE ABLE TO SUPPORT A SINGLE MOM AND HER SON
THE FIRST LARGE DONATION: 400 EURO FOR 60 HOURS OF TUTORING
On Friday the 9th of November,we met Minevere for the second time in the house of an old lady, not far from the school of her children, where she is employed full-time as a caregiver. We had met the middle-aged mother before to get a sense of her life situation and to hear how we might be able to do something good for her. Although she rents a small apartment not far from her work, the family spends hardly any time there. Minevere can only afford this little home, because she works full-time, which over time has led the children to spend a lot of time at old lady’s home after school and now most of their family life takes place here.
The father of her two children died in a car accident three years ago, leaving the mother
immigrated from Albania, alone with her now six-year-old daughter and twelve-year-old son. Since then she has been fighting for the existence of her family without proper education and with very limited writing and Greek skills. To make matters worse, a rare skin disease of the son is added, which makes school life among peers not easy.
We have learned from his mother, his teachers, and Toula, the founder of CESRT, who keeps giving them small donations, that he finds it difficult to follow the classes at school and needs help outside of school hours.
Together with the tutor Maria we had discussed all the details and a fixed number of hours and now met the small family. Together, we completed the contract we designed, discussed the final details, and took a photo as proof for you. The mother got a piece of paper on which the teacher is supposed to check off every hour of tutoring, to have a guarantee for her and you, our donors, about fulfilling these Travel For Smiles funded lessons. The lessons will take place three times a week, after school, in the old lady’s house. Below you can read the contract and the details again if you want.
With a big smile and a lot of gesturing, we said goodbye to everyone involved and headed back towards the Warehouse of CESRT.
It gives us tremendous pleasure to have given this child a better chance of education and will stay in touch in the future to be informed about progress.
Thank you very much for your trust in our project, which has once again enabled us to alleviate a little concern and give some smiles. We continue to look for fates that we can support a little and will cause many more beaming faces with you!
